Mercy in the News

During the past months, many sisters and associates of the Regional Community of Providence have been honored for their accomplishments and the they have done in their ministries. Among the Mercy newsmakers are:

Marietta Walsh, RSM was appointed for another two year term on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Aging for Rhode Island. Sister Marietta has also been selected as one the Rhode Island alternates to the White House Conference on Aging in October 2005.

Regina Brennan, RSM was presented with the 2005 Dedicated Saint award at St. Raphael Academy. Nominated by alumni, honorees are those who have provided service beyond their job description and who are living examples of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Sister Regina is a guidance counselor at the Pawtucket school.

Rosellen Gallogly, RSM had an annual award named after her by the Homeless Service Providers Network of New Bedford. The network encompasses the various agencies in the southeast Massachusetts city that offer services such a soup kitchens, shelters and affordable housing. Citing Sister Rosellen's years of service to the community, network officials said they wanted to name the award after her since her work, Market Ministries, a soup kitchen and shelter, is a linchpin of local homeless care.

Patricia Harrington, RSM; Kathleen Harrington, RSM; and Shelia Harrington, RSM, all siblings, who along with their brother, Reverend Brian Harrington celebrated their joint entrance to religious life and their collective 175 years of service on September 8, 2004, the Feast of the Birth of Mary. On March 12, 2005, the four were honored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of New Bedford, MA as their Persons of the Year for this achievement. Their remarkable vocation story started when Sister Patricia entered the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Providence in 1957. She was followed in 1958, by her brother, who entered St. Thomas Minor Seminary, then by their sister Kathleen, who joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1962 and Shelia in 1964. Each was just 17 years old.

Associate Cecile Clement Grobe had two of her musical compositions placed on the Official Ballot for the 2005 Grammy Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Committee. The songs are Trees, which was on the ballot in the Song of the Year, Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (Without Orchestra) and Best Classical Contemporary Composition categories, plus In the Moment placed on the ballot in the Best Classical Album category.

M. Josepha Haskins, RSM and Eva Lallo, RSM were each awarded a Mercy Action Grant from the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas for the work done in their ministries. Sister Eva received a $50,000 grant for the Total Care Program at Casa Corazon de la Misericordia, a home in San Pedro Sula, Honduras that cares for youngsters with HIV/Aids. Sister Josepha received a $25,000 grant for the Reddy Tri-County Health Clinic in Richlands, VA.

And, Isabel Jovel Cabrera, RSM made her first profession as a Sister of Mercy of the Regional Community of Providence on March 5, 2005 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Congratulations to all!
